Educational differentiation by gender

SEX, GENDER AND ITSROLE IN EDUCATION

The sex factor has traditionally been "educational differentiation" to the point that "female education" was the subject of institutionalization after the male. But now the co-education has become widespread in the developed and developing.

1. THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVES ON GENDER DIFFERENCES IN EDUCATION MAJOR.

Several theories attempt to explain the differences betweenmen and women in important characteristics for our society. They are grouped into 3 groups: biological, social psychological and educational.

• Biological Perspective.

It is supported by genetic, endocrine and neurological determine two ways of being female-male. And theories about the differences between the sexes:
- Genetic. Is based on chromosome differentiation
-The influence of hormonal changes becomes apparent in adolescence  between the sexes, but does not yet demonstrate the relationship between hormone levels and cognitive development.
- Cerebral organization. There is a difference between men and women. It seems that the females use much earlier left hemisphere and that hypothetically could be related to cognitive differences.
- Differences in maturation. Ahypothesis about the physical development is precocious in girls about their mental side. This would explain the different cognitive, yet unproven.

• Psychosocial perspective.

It relies on features or characteristics as paper, stereotypes and expectations that each society considers appropriate for each gender.
Study the effects of family and social environment in the acquisition of behaviorpatterns that are considered desirable for each group.

• Educational.

2. HISTORICAL AND CURRENT APPROACHES ON EDUCATION AS A FUNCTION OF GENDER.

Psychology presents a portrait of each gender differential.

• Friedman 1989. No differences in the results of tests of general intelligence, but the girls excel in verbal ability, learning and the language used before, readmore and write better spelling.

Boys have more language disorders and difficulties in learning to read.
But in recent years this difference disappears after adolescence.

• According Mathews (1986). The differences in fine motor skills are in favor of females until puberty.
The differences in learning and memory, for both sexes processed and fixed in thememory better information related to their gender. The differences in non verbal communication favor the female group.

• As for personality differences, Maccoby and Jacklin( 1974). Argue that they are only significant differences in aggressiveness in favor of the male group.
Further studies of these authors to contribute to the maintenance of differences in dominance in favor of men;tendency to be influenced by other women for being in adolescence that are seen to be more intense social pressure on the gender role stereotypes.

• Empathy and adaptation in favor of the female group, and self-concept and self-esteem and attribution variants of achievement, in favor of males.
Differences in interests and...
