EDGAR and MATY are two workers of an investigation office. Edgar has just received a last minute research, about theoverpopulation of the American wild horses and their effect in the environment, while Maty was arriving.
EDGAR: Hey Maty, watch this. I’ve been informed about a recent research. The overpopulation of wildhorses in the states is making it more polluted.
MATY: What are you talking about? Let me see. It’s a completely lie!
EDGAR: Why do you say that? Read here, they say that in places where the animalsare most concentrated, like Nevada, new problems are surfacing.
MATY: Problems? What kind of problems?
EDGAR: Let me read it again. Here it is. Listen: The last resources have proved that American WildHorses, as known as Mustang Horses, overgrazing can lead to erosion and water pollution and make way for pesky invasive species like cheatgrass. Such ecological damage causes food shortages for thehorses as well as the sage grouse, bighorn sheep, elk and domestic cattle that share their pastures. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has claimed that horses are destroying critical habitat, competingfor grazing lands, and overpopulating.
MATY: They’re totally crazy. Take a look of this article, here The National Academy of Sciences says BLM has never presented any evidence that horses destroyhabitat, nor that their population levels are what it claims they are. In fact, reducing horse populations in a given area has a negligible effect on range conditions: after massive wild horse roundups,herd areas show little or no improvement, especially in instances when cattle numbers remain the same.
EDGAR: There are some groups whom has reported problems with wild horses, primarily cattle andsheep ranchers and those who depend on the livestock industry, argue essentially that feral horses degrade rangeland and compete with private livestock for public land forage.
