Outside Reading Book Project
Quarter #1

Requirements:

* Your book must be at least 250 pages in length and have a lexile level above 1,000 (you can check this on lexile.com).

* Your book cannot have been made into a movie or TV show / series.

* Suggested reading list below. You will receive extra points if your book is from this list AND fits the above criteria.

*Mr. De Marco must approve your book by Thursday October 25th.

* You cannot change books or be reading the same book as a classmate, so make sure that you take the time to carefully choose the book you would like to read. If it is discovered later that your book does not fit the requirements, you will get a zero on this project, which is worth 10% of your Quarter #2 grade.

* There areTHREE due dates for this project and NO late work will be accepted:
Thursday October 25th (Choice)
Monday December 3rd (Project)
Sunday December 9th (Essay typed on WPP)

Monday December 3rd:

On or after the due date, you will be required to introduce your novel to the class by filming a 3 to 5 minute interview with you dressed as one of thecharacters in the book you read. You will be pretending that a magazine or newspaper reporter is interviewing this character. The interview must include (but is not limited to) to the following:

* lists the book’s title, author, genre and includes an image of the book’s cover
* briefly summarizes the plot (without giving away any surprises, twists, or the ending)
* explainswhat you liked and disliked about being in the book or a list of its positives and negatives
* supports a recommendation to a specific audience

This video should be saved as: Your Last Name.Period and must be given to Mr. De Marco on a USB BEFORE 8am, Monday, December 3rd. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.

WPP Essay Options due
Sunday December 9th:

*Directions: This essay must be submitted by Sunday October 14th.
Choose one of the 5 options listed below and follow the WPP directions:
1.Go to the WPP Webpage: https://www.wpponline.com/Welcome.aspx
2. Use your Username and Password
3. From the Home Page click the “Practice” tab at the top right
4. Select “Outside Reading Book Quarter 1” from the Topic drop-down menu.
5. Click “BeginWriting”.
6. Type (or copy / paste) your essay in the Text Box.
7. When you are finished click “Submit”

* Option #1: Although literary critics have tended to praise the unique in literary characterizations, many authors have employed the stereotyped character successfully. In a well-written essay, show how the conventional or stereotyped character or characters from your novel function to achievethe author's purpose.

* Option #2: Choose a complex and important character in your novel, who might, on the basis of the character's actions alone, be considered evil or immoral. In a well-organized essay, explain both how and why the full presentation of the character in the work makes us react more sympathetically than we otherwise might. Avoid plot summary.

* Option #3: A recurringtheme in literature is the classic war between a passion and responsibility. For instance, a personal cause, a love, a desire for revenge, a determination to redress a wrong, or some other emotion or drive may conflict with moral duty. In a well-written essay show clearly the nature of the conflict in your novel, its effects upon the character, and its significance to the work.

* Option #4:Select an important character from your novel that is a villain. Then, in a well-organized essay, analyze the nature of the character's villainy and show how it enhances meaning in the work. Do not merely summarize the plot.

* Option #5: In great literature, no scene of violence exists for its own sake. Describe how your novel confronts the reader or audience with a scene or scenes of...
