San José del Guaviare capital of the Guaviare department is located in the south east from Colombia. It has an extension of 42.327 km2.
The local headboard is from 175 meters oversea level to 400 km to south of the Bogotá city. Its coordinates are two grades 34 minutes are seconds north and 72 grades, 38 minutes, 25 seconds east.
Guaviare’s territories are principally planesand these belong to the transition between orinoquia and Amazonia.
Guaviare and guayabero rivers are used to communicate different close towns inside and outside from the department.
Along time SanJosé del Guaviare has belonged so some places from Colombia such as Popayan, Boyacá, Cauca and Vaupes.
Then, next to Guaviare and guayabero rivers there were native communities like guahibos,tucanos, cubeos and kurripacos, who lived specially for hunting and fishing but the most known group is nukak or makus.
Later, a lot of colonist people come to this region through the Guaviare River;In this way they were building their shacks.
Then, the rubber men were coming because of “cinchona bark”
Tigrillos, rubber and wood extraction.
In this way, San José del Guaviare started to from.Besides, other people come here because of interest for a “fast and easy” richness. First, rubber, then wild animals skins business. Later, some exotic plants from the region sale and last coca cropswere the bases of economy.
On March 19th, 1910 important gentlemen like homero benjumea, dionisio Rodriguez, Pablo espitia, Felix restrepo, Carlos Duran and nepomuceno Gonzales came to the countryhouse and they baptized it with the holy name “san José” and they added the river name.
In the 1943, the first born was created, in 1950 first churches and a school was inaugurated. In 1952, becauseof violence some houses was burned and their occupants were dispersed, more later, they came back to the region but they had to reconstruct the town almost in totality.
