The word epistemology is derived from two Greek words which are “episteme”, which means “knowledge”, and the word “logos” which means “the study of”. When we put epistemology into action werereasoning about knowledge, what can I know, and how. Epistemology answers questions like what is knowledge, How is knowledge acquired, and something I find really interesting, to what extent is it possiblefor a given subject or entity to be known. According to the text used in class this topic reached a peak and from there, 2 schools derived, the school of rationalism and the school of empiricism.Rene Descartes is known for many things, among them rationalism. His extensive repertoire of higher learning and mathematical talent led him to create this way of reasoning. He basically establishedthat, like math, reasoning should also be a step by step method using intuition and deductive logic to reach conclusions. A rationalist person basically believes that our mind is the best way to reach aconclusion about something because our senses can be deceiving. Rationalists also believe that humans are born with innate knowledge as part of our rationalist nature and that these concepts are notconsequent to experiences had. Over the weekend I bought myself a pair of Express shades. Every time I put them on my senses show me my surroundings got dimmer. I know this is not true usingrationalism, I know my surroundings are still bright, just my shades make it seem dimmer.
The definition of empirical is basically something that is verifiable by observation or experience rather than theoriesor logic thus giving us, empiricists or empiricism. Empiricists believe that everything we have in our mind comes from our senses, and that we cannot, without experience know the effect of a certaincause.
