Going Green
Humans as individuals and as a collective have had a negative impact on the environment.   Going green is a modern concept that I feel is extremely important to our present andfuture well being and more importantly to the well being of our children and grandchildren.   Air pollution, water pollution, waste pollution and greenhouse gas emissions have all led to thedeterioration of our environment.   It is not only necessary for us to clean up our act individually to save our planet, but it is also necessary for society as a whole to do the same.
There are many manmade sources of air pollutants including automobiles, factories, power plants and small business and household products.   Air pollutants harm not only our health by causing serious respiratoryillnesses, but also harm the environment.   Some of the effects on the environment include acid rain, smog and the depletion of the ozone layer.   The environmental protection agency advances and helps toimplement methods of controlling air pollution. These methods include reduction in the use of ozone-depleting substances, phasing out the use of certain toxic chemicals, developing treatment methods forpolluted areas and the creation of cleaner alternatives.   We as individuals can help to reduce air pollution by car pooling, taking advantage of public transportation, walking or riding bicycles totravel or by investing in hybrid automobiles.  
Water pollutants come from sewage; industrial waste, agricultural runoff and storm water drainage and include pesticides, lead, arsenic andpolychlorinated biphenyls. Water pollution affects the environment by poisoning and deforming fish and other animals, unbalancing ecosystems and reducing diversity in plant and animal life.   Waterpollution also affects our health by contaminating drinking water, which causes sickness and disease and accumulating in food making it dangerous or inedible.
