Read pages 72 to 74: Ethical egoism refuted, altruism? No way!, and The Least you need to know (you can find the reading in Pape Tec), and answer the following:
1. Answer the “Moral Musings” question (P. 72): Do you think volunteerism is morally wrong? Explain your answer deeply.
Actually, we thinkvolunteerism is morally right. Dedicating your time to be on service for someone else is a good action to do. Volunteerism makes a person not to be selfish. Of course, there are people who don’t like to help others but by making them to volunteer, who says they won’t start liking it?

2. What is the difference with being self-interested and being selfish?
Being selfish is acting in your benefitwithout regard, and often harming, other individuals. Meanwhile self-interest is acting in your benefit, but with consideration of others needs and a lack of harm towards others.

3. The author mentions that we now have popular shows that promote the ideas of psychological and ethical egoism. One of those shows is Big Brother. Why do you think that this show promotes the ideas of psychologicaland ethical egoism?
Big brother promotes ethical egoism because each of the members inside the house only thinks about themselves. They just care about them. It doesn’t matter the well being of others.

4. Why does the author say that we all require charity now and again? (P. 75).
We all require of charity because is always needed in every society. Charity is understanding someone’sdeficiencies and helping him/her to succeed.

5. Give two examples of two different situations in which you required charity or altruism.

Charity: When I was in junior high school, it was used to go to a charity home. So, I was assigned a little four years-old girl to take care of the whole day. As Christmas was about to come in two weeks, I bought with my savings a Kelly doll.Actually, I was going to buy a box of 32 Crayola markers with that money but then I thought that someone else needed my help. I still remember her surprise when I handed out the doll. She just stared at me and run away with the doll. I was happy to make someone else happy. Narda

Altruism: Firefighters are a clear example of altruism. Altruism is helping someone without expecting something back. It’s almost like philanthropy. Firefighters are more concerned about saving someone else’s life. They risk their own life when they go inside a place with fire.

6. Imagine that you are ONE of the following characters and write a letter (half page long) asking people to volunteer (giving their time, not money) at your organization. Explain the reasons why is it important and which will be thebenefits for them and their society. Add any other details that you consider useful.
