Should Gay Marriage be legalized in United States?
Juan Javier Zambrano Carbo

Ernest Gaines said, “Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?” Since 2001, ten countries have begun allowing same-sex couples to marry, such as, Spain, Argentina, Canada (CNSNews.com). In the United States same-sex marriages are not recognized federally. There are seven states in the U.S. where gay marriage is allowed and forty-four states where they have constitutional amendments either banning or censoring gay marriage (NCSL.org).   Same-sex marriage is not only beneficial for the economy but also banning gay marriage is unconstitutional and U.S. Supreme Court has declared that marriage is a fundamental liberty; therefore, gay marriage should belegalized.
A cause for banning gay marriage is because it is incompatible with the beliefs, sacred texts, and traditions of many religious groups. These groups say that expanding marriage to include homosexual couples may lead to churches being forced to marry couples and children being taught in schools that same-sex marriage is the same as opposite-sex marriage.
The first amendment states,“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise…” (US Const., Amend. I). In light of this law, banning gay marriage should be considered unconstitutional.
Same-sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment that heterosexual couples have. Gay marriage is protected by the Constitution’s commitment to libertyand equality. There are many rights that United States denies to same-sex marriages, for example, the right to petition for same-sex partner to migrate or the right to inherit property from a partner in the absence of a will. This is not just in a society where equal rights are claimed for everyone.
One of the main issues is the tax payment. Married couples in U.S. are allowed to avoid sometaxes. The money and properties you can transfer between spouses is limitless when you are married. Same-sex marriage is not federally considered a marriage; therefore, the laws that apply to single people are the same for gay marriages, making relationships very taxing (Wood 1). Allowing same-sex couples to marry will give them access to basic rights such as taxation.
The only thing that shouldmatter in marriage is love. The U.S. Supreme Court declared that the “Marriage is one of the basic civil rights of man, fundamental to our very existence and survival” (Rotondi 1). It is no one else’s business if two men or two women want to get married. Two people of the same sex who love each other should be allowed to publicly celebrate their commitment. Marriage in the U.S. is an institution thathas gone under several major transformations. Interracial marriage was illegal in many U.S. states until a Supreme Court decision. When the opposition says that gay marriage is an abomination we have to remember that they have said this before to avoid giving groups equal rights. The ethical solution to this is to legalize gay marriage.
The right for homosexuals to marry would not affect straightmarriage, because it wouldn't change anything having to do with straight marriage at all. Opposition stands that marriage should not be extended to same-sex couples because homosexual relations have nothing to do with procreation. In that case these people would also have to ban marriage for sterile people. Opposition states that allowing gay marriage would further weaken the institutionincreasing divorce rates.
Nevertheless, Massachusetts, which became the first state to legalize same-sex marriage, had the lowest divorce rate in the U.S. in 2011 (Reich 1). Everyone believes there is one person who is out there to love us. Homosexual people feel the same way.
Same-sex couples cannot have children by themselves, without some type of help. Parenthood is a benefit of marriage; as a...
