GUADALUPE YANCUICTLALPAN


Gualupita. It is popularly known as a village in the municipality of Tianguistenco , State of Mexico . The name of Santa Maria de Guadaluperecalls the tradition of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to St. Juan Diego in 1531.



The community is known for making handmade woolen garments (sweaters, jackets, overcoats) which aresold on Saturday and Sunday in the local flea market where you can also locate an Mexican dishes and all kinds of clothing.



Because of its long tradition of producing handcrafted garments,Gualupita is called: "The land of zarape".



Gualupita is located 30km from the city of Toluca and 60 km from Mexico City .

ETYMOLOGY
Yancuic Nahuatl, meaning new; tlal.li, meaning earth, andthat means on bread. "In the New Earth".  Guadalupe's name comes from the Arabic for "River of Light".


HISTORY
There are few data on its foundation but if some stories about the community: According to a legend in the sixteenth century, a family of unknown origin, which was to Tenochtitlan , passed through this place and liked it so much they decided to stay and live there.


Oraltradition has it that in the seventeenth century by several people took the Pilgrim Virgin of Tepeyac because they wanted to raise funds for the construction of the old Basilica of Guadalupe .  Whenthe procession bearing the image passed by where the church is now, rested, but want to leave the picture became heavy, so people thought that the image no longer wanted to go, thinking it was amiraclesince then the image stayed in this place. First he built a chapel and then the temple currently observed.
