Joya de Ceren
Location:
In the Zapotitan valley, municipality of San Juan Opico, department of la Libertad. Situated al 1480 feet above sea level
Coordinates:
N 13 49’ 38.2” latitude, W89 21’ 23.2” longitude UTM 145260mE / 1539990mN 16 P (WGS84).
Joya de Ceren:
Was a Maya village buried beneath the ash of sudden volcanic eruption around the AD 649. This event resulted in thepreservation of its structures, crops and other evidence daily lofe to degree unparalleled in American archaeology. Joya de Ceren provides a unique window to understanding life in a prehispanicvillage. Due to its importance UNESCO ha named this a World Heritage Site

Zapotitan Valley housed several Mayancommunities. In deep excavations on this site, has recovered little evidence of these early settlers
AD 640:
The valley witnessed a small eruption,of little consequence to majority of its inhabitants.Joya de Ceren, however, was located less than a kilometer away from the eruption’s source, and was completely buried under 4 to 8 archaeological site know in the American
AD 1200 to 1550:
A fewhouse built here although their the occupants had no way of knowing that a settlement buried centuries before lay under their feet. The new resident of the site were Pipil
1976:
Date of Joya deCeren’s accidental discovery when bulldozers were used to level land for a construction project. The project supervisor notified the authorities in Archaeology who recorded the site.
1978:
Thefirst archaeological excavations al Joya de Ceren was carried out this year.
