El problema de la Torre de Hanoi: representaciones
mentales generadas en función del material disponible y
su influencia en el proceso de resolución

Resumen
En el experimento que se describe a continuación los sujetos debían resolver el problema de
la Torre de Hanoi, que se podía presentar de dos formas diferentes: en su presentaciónhabitual, con discos que se podían mover fisicamente (Manipulación) o exigiendo que
representaran sus movimientos mediante papel y lápiz (Representación).
El objetivo era comprobar que el material disponible influye en la representación mental
(espacio del problema) que generan los sujetos y que, a su vez, esta representación produce
diferencias observables en el proceso de resolución. La variabledependiente utilizada fueron las
verbalizaciones producidas durante la ejecución (verbalización concurrente).
Los análisis de los protocolos verbales demostraron que: (a) La cantidad y clase de
verbalizaciones varían a• lo largo del proceso de resolución; en los primeros momentos son
numerosas las alusiones a las reglas que rigen la legalidad de los movimientos (Instrucciones),
a la posiciónque ocupan los discos en cada momento (Configuración Actual) y hay muchos
comentarios sobre lo que el sujeto piensa hacer o quiere conseguir (Planificación), en tanto que
en la parte final sólo describe los movimientos que va haciendo. (b) Las dos formas de
presentación producen demandas perceptivas y de memoria diferentes y éstas se manzfiestan en
las clases de verbalizaciones que se hacen:en Representación el sujeto realiza más Planificación
porque se le olvida lo que ha decidido (Memoria), tiene más problemas en la identzficación y
reproducción de los discos (Configuración Actual) y se refiere explícitamente a las Instrucciones
con mucha más frecuencia que en Manipulación.

Tower of Hanoi problem: mentalrepresentations generated
as a function of the available material and their influence
in the solving process

Abstract
In the following experiment, the subjects had to solve the problem of the Tower of Hanoi,
which could present itself in two different forms: the usual presentation, with disks that could
be physically moved (Manipulation) or by asking them to represent their moves using paperand pencil (Representation).
The objective was to check that the material available influences the mental representation
(problem space) which the subjects generate, and that at the same time, this representation
produces observable differences in the solving process. The dependent variable used was the
verbalizations produced during the execution (concurrent verbalization).
The analysis ofthe verbal protocols showed that: (a) the quantity and quality of
verbalizations vary throughout the solving process; at the beginning, the references made both
to the rules which control the legality of the moves (Instructions) and to the position which the
disks occupy in each move (Actual Configuration) are numerous, and also there are many
comments made about what the subject plans to doand wants to achieve (Planning), while
at the end he or she only describes the move which he or she is making. (b) The two forms
of presentation produce different perceptive and memory demands, and these are shown in the
types of verbalizations made: in Representation the subjects carry out more Planning because
they forget what they have decided (Memory), they have more problems in identifyingand
reproducing the disks (Actual Configuration) and they refer explicitly to the Instructions much
more frequently than in Manipulation.
