Do you remember Pinocchio? I bet you all know his story. Pinocchio was a wooden boy, with the peculiarity that every time he lied his nose grew like a tree. It may be amazing to perceive a lie as easy as we could notice a nose like that, but we aren´t that lucky, that´s why through history, man has sought to develop tools to detect lies, whileothers strive even more to avoid being caught in them.Lies come and go, in average we lie between 6 and 10 times a day. Then imagine how many lies we listen to! Knowing this, the million dollar question is: how can we detect a lie¿

There are different techniques to detect a lie, they range from sophisticateddevices that measure your pulse and your pupils dilation when speaking, to different substances known as the "drugs of truth" that are highly dangerous specially when it is supplied without proper medical supervision, it could cause an heart attack on our presumed liar.
So, as we do not want to take this risk, and given the importance of detecting lies in everyday life, the best thing is to use ourown natural tools: our eyes and ears.
First I should tell you that you can’t expect to find lies in common “polite exchanges”, because they are present in all cultures and they can´t count as a lie. For example, if you are in a bad day and someone tells you "hi! How are you", the expected response is "fine and you", in order to get to the real point of the conversation (maybe it was just acourtesy, maybe he wanted to ask for a favor, etc) . We can´t say that's a lie, because we are expecting it. The other day I saw a someone from my PR class, so I greet her to remind her about our project, but when I said "hello how are you" she started to vent her problems with me. I had to calm her down and find an excuse to leave because I'm not good for comforting others.
The thing is that Insituations likes this, lies wouldn’t bother us, but there are other situations where we want the truth!
I´ll start by telling you how to detect lies through body language, since this is the clearest manifestation of the true intentions of a person. Because liars are able to choose between lying and telling the truth, they know the difference. This conscious intention of lying is what unmasks theperson, making the lie obvious if you pay close attention to these cues:
The main signs that someone is lying can be observed in his stiffness, his physical expression will be limited, with few arm and hand movements. Mostly they will touch their face, throat and mouth or scratch the nose or behind the ear
Another important thing to note is the fluidity of emotional gestures. A real emotion iscomplex, but instantaneous. When a person is lying the display of emotion is delayed, stays longer than it would naturally, and then stops suddenly
When someone is lying facial Expressions will be limited to mouth movements trying to fake emotions. For example; when someone smiles naturally their whole face is involved
When you feel someone is lying to you, you may fell brave enough to confronthim, that’s when you will be able to analyze his response as well:
• A guilty person gets defensive. An innocent one will often go on the offensive.
• A liar is uncomfortable facing his accuser and may turn his head or body away.
• A liar might unconsciously place objects between themselves and you. (hands, books, etc)

Besides body language, you should heed the words spoken in conversation.For example a liar will use your words to answer a question or will simple “avoid” lying by not making direct statements. It means that they will imply answers instead of denying something directly.
• The guilty person may speak more than natural, adding unnecessary details to convince you... they are not comfortable with silence or pauses in the conversation.
• A liar may leave out pronouns...
