Comparison between “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, by Robert Frost, and a Deciding Moment in my Life
It’sinteresting to see how I can identify myself with the situations or events I read in different works in literature like stories or even poems. When I read “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” by RobertFrost, I instantly identified myself with the speaker of this poem and his situation when he had to deal with a distraction. The moment of uncertainty the speaker has, when he makes a decision, issimilar to an experience I had last summer where I had to decide between keeping my promise to go to my best friend’s party or going to the Central American Games with the boy I liked.
In “Stopping byWoods on a Snowy Evening”, the speaker who gets distracted as he walks through the woods but ignores his distraction and continues his road. The speaker realizes that someone he knows lives there andsays: “Whose woods these are I think I know” (Line 1). He then has to make the decision of staying or keep going. But he recognizes that is a cold long night, in fact “The darkest evening of the year” heignores the distraction and continues (Line 8). The speaker has a long road ahead of him before he can rest and states: “But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep”.(Line 14/Line15).
Last summer I had an experience where I was distracted and had to make a decision between keeping my promise to go to my best friend’s farewell party or changing my initial plans and go to theCentral American Games 2010 opening. Since my best friend enlisted in the Navy, she planned a party so she could enjoy one last night with her closest friends and family. When the day of the partyarrived, three hours before it started, the boy I liked asked me out to the Central American Sport Games opening which was at the same hour of my friend’s party.
