DEALING WITH QUESTIONS



Asking questions is quite an important aspect in any language. In English there are three possible forms for asking questions, depending on your intention: YES/NO questions, WH- questions and TAG questions.

1. YES/NO questions

We use these questions when we have a certain ideaand we want to confirm it; in other words, we want to be sure about something.

Ex. Are you from Ibagué? No, I’m not.

Does Camilo like swimming? Yes, he does.

Basic Question Structure
The basic structure of this kind of question in English is very simple:
auxiliary verb + subject + main verb
|auxiliary verb |subject |main verb |  |
|Do|you |like |Mary? |
|Are |they |playing |football? |
|Will |Anthony |go |to Tokyo? |
|Have |you |seen |ET? |


Exception!
For the verb be in simple present and simple past, we do not use an auxiliary verb. We simply reverse thepositions of be and subject:
|Statement: |He |is |German. |
|Question: |Is |he |German? |


Remember that you use the same auxiliary when you’re giving short answers.

Ex. Will your parents travel next month? Yes, they will.
