WATING FOR SUPERMAN

“Waiting for superman” is a documentary about America’s failing public school system and the need for reform, it showed how education in United States is really, and it showed different students ‘cases of different towns of United Sates, especially in low income areas.
This documentary primarily talked about with issues facing over crowded in USA, for example underfundedintercity public schools. The children who live there, they have no choice but to attend substandard schools or try to get into a charter school. The charter schools are funded with public money (except for their facilities) and they are an alternative to regular public schools systems. The charters are popular and only have room for a certain number of students. By law when charter schools havetoo many applicants they must hold a lottery to see who will get the limited number of places for children outside schools district.
I think most people can agree that all kids deserve a great education, so the education does not have to base on a lottery, however there are many things that it make possible, that was the case of Antony, Bianca, Daisy, Francisco and Emily.
Anthony was a student of5th grader who lived with his grandmother in a tough Washington D.C neighborhood. He had struggled with school over the years, but recently, thanks to a good teacher, he had turned it around and had done well. Unfortunately, the middle school that Anthony was slated to attend next year regularly puts students 2 to 3 years behind by the time they move on to high school. In the hopes of finding away out, Anthony was one of 61 students who applied for the raffle; in order to he had an opportunity to study.
Another example is Bianca; she was a kindergartner that lived in Harlem with her single mother. Costly tuition of the school prevented Bianca's mother from continuing to send her to a private Catholic school that it was very expensive.
Therefore, Bianca (along with other many students)had registered for one of the spots available at a free charter school.
In the case of Daisy, her parents could not afford to send her to a private school, and there were other students with different cases. So all these problems affect the students, that why some of students are demotivated to study.
Continuing with the documentary “waiting for superman” it said that there were a highpercent where students do not graduate on time, it is call Dropout factory, and this is another big problem in urban public school.
Students drop out because the schools fail them, but they could accomplish practically anything if they were saved from bad teachers, as I the movie said, they are teacher who are chronically bad, they know it, and other knows it, but the union contract says: you cannotfire them. It is known like “the dance of the lemon”, each states deal with his in a different way such as “pass the trash” or “the turkey trop”, it stems from the very simple fact that it is extremely difficult to get rid of bad teachers, especially after they achieve tenure. One of the main reasons for this is the strength of the teacher's union; unions are designed to protect teachers, negotiating good contracts for them and ensuring that they are not fired without cause, but many unions will go to bat for every terminated teacher, including teachers terminated for very good reasons.
The documentary also mentioned that in New York, there is something else about bad teacher; it is called “Rubber Room”. These were the offices where teachers accused of misconduct or incompetence got theirfull salaries while doing nothing for months -- even years -- on end, while waiting for disciplinary hearings. These teachers collect their full salaries and accumulate benefits reading or playing cards.
On the other hand the documentary also was focused on Michelle Rhee, the chancellor of the Washington, D.C. public school system, who has become an icon among both Democratic and Republican...
