2. MULTIPLE CHOICE. [set 14]:
. . . and so I have watched your programme for years and have always enjoyed it. In fact it's one of the few programmes which is also suitable for children and I know that many families like ours watch it together. However, last week I was very disappointed and also very angry thatno warning was given at the beginning of the programme that what was going to be shown was unsuitable for children. It is quite unnecessary to show close-up pictures of people who have been murdered. I know it's not real blood but children don't always realise this and my children were very frightened. There is also no need for people to use all sorts of bad language. Children very quickly copywhat they hear and swear words and suchlike are the very things parents don't want their children to use. Newspapers and news programmes are full of all the terrible happenings in the world and I think we can expect television to provide us with an escape from reality. I don't know whether you actually enjoy unpleasant and shocking scenes but since last week I know that I for one will never watchthe series again and I hope that more viewers like me will feel the same and simply switch off their sets.

a) I really dislike many TV programmes in which rich and beautiful people lead such exciting lives. Reality isn't like this for most of us and so your programme which dealt with the terrible crime of murder was a good way of reminding us what the real world is like. b) Many children never watch the news on TV and so I was very glad last week when myfamily and I watched your programme on murder and what it must actually be like to experience the effects of such a crime when it is close to your family. c) Some TV producers seem unable to tell the difference between what should and should not be shown on family TV programmes. My family was very upset by what they saw last week, it was as sad and violent as the news. d) I know it's impossible toprotect children from hearing swear words and so it's a good idea to include them in a programme where parents are likely to be present. In this way we can deal with the problem at the time, pointing out which words one should never use. 3. TRUE OR FALSE? [set 4] Visiting London with children?
