Who says British students are lazy? Not us! After doing a survey of typical 15-8 year old students, we can report that 45% ofthem had part-time jobs during the school term – usually a Saturday job. They worked, on average, for 8 hours a week. In addition, 62% has a full-time job during the school holidays and worked onaverage 38 hours a week. Did it make any difference if they came from a rich or poor family? Apparently not. Almost all parents wanted their children to get a job, any job, and the students themselveswanted to work – or at least they wanted to earn money. Some typical students told us about the jobs they had done.

When Alex White was 14, he got up at 6 o’clock every morning and deliverednewspapers all the houses in his village. Then, one day, he fell asleep while they were doing a Maths test and the teacher noticed. He phoned Alex’s parents and complained about Alex’s behaviour. Now, heonly works during the school holidays.

Last Christmas holidays, Amy Hammond worked in the fruit and vegetable department at the local supermarket. I didn’t enjoy it at all! Her boss was reallyhorrible to her – she doesn’t think he liked students. So, after she had worked there for a month, she left.

Last summer, Jodie England worked in a pub. The pub was on the coast so when itclosed after lunch she went to the beach. She lay there all afternoon until it was time to start work again at 6 o’clock. It wasn’t like working at all – it was more like being at a party every night....
