LAKE QUILOTOA
• LOCATION
The Lake Quilotoa is located in the northwest of Latacunga in the province of Cotopaxi in the canton Sigchos, 15 minutes from the town of Zumbagua.
• DESCRIPTIONThe lake has around three kilometer in diameter and its walls are vertical with several peaks of rock that mark its contour which gives the appearance of a giant mountain range.
The luminous turquoisewater of this lake irrigates an extinct volcano it hypnotizes the tourists, making it perhaps the most impressive view in Ecuador.
On a clear day, one can observer the spectacle of the skyreflected in the rich waters in mineral to 400 meters below the margin, and in the distance the covered peaks give snow of the Ilinizas and the Cotopaxi, that leaves with the mouth open to their visitors.The Lake Quilotoa was formed about 850 years ago after a massive eruption led to the collapse of the volcano. Locals believe that the lake is bottomless, and geologists estimate its depth at 250meters.
• VEGETATION
The Lake Quilotoa it’s a very poor area in vegetation, due to its gulches and slopes. In the outskirts species are observed gives chuquiraguas, mortiño, pumamaqui, romerillo, andother species.
• WILDLIFE
Around the lagoon has been observed animal species such as the wolf of blizzard, fox, rabbits, deer and other species. The existing bird conservation in this area isrepresented by the buzzer, dove, quilico, coal, brown quinde, parrot, sparrow and huairachuro.
• TOURIST ATTRACTIVENESS
