ACTIVITIES AND SUMMARIES

SUMMARY CHAPTER 1
‘A SURPRISE FOR THE CUTHBERTS’

Matthew Cuthbert, a 60 year-old man, who lived with his sister, Marilla, 5 years younger, on Prince Edward Island, Canada. He had his farm, Green Gables, outside Avonlea. One afternoon he drove to the train station to pick up an orphan boy, sent by children’s home, to help him in the farm work.But they sent a little girl, Anne; she was about 11, with red hair in two plaits, a small, white and thin face. She was wearing an old hat and a dress small for her. Despite the mistake Matthew decided to take Anne to his home.

Along the journey Anne talked a lot, and Matthew enjoyed it very much. She told her story and her life. When they arrived home Marilla came to the door andsurprised asked her brother about the girl. Matthew told her about the children’s home mistake. At first, Marilla did not want Anne and said to her brother that she had to come back to the children’s home, Anne listened and began to cry, Marilla agreed to let Anne spend the night at Green Gables. After Anne went to bed Matthew and Marilla talked about the girl and finally agreed to keep Anne.SUMMARY CHAPTER 2
‘AT GREEN GABLES’

The next morning Marilla announced Anne she could stay and they would adopt her. Anne started to cry because she was so happy to live at Green Gables and be part of a family. During their chat Anne asked Marilla If she could call her Aunt, but Marilla refused. Anne also asked Marilla the chance to get a friend and Marilla told her about the Barry’sdaughter, Diana, an 11 year-old girl, a good and clever girl, with black hair. When the two girls met each other they became friends immediately. So during the mornings Anne helped Marilla with the housework and in the afternoons she played with Diana, or talked to Matthew while he was working in the farm.

One day, Mrs. Rachel Lynde, a friend of Marilla, an old, fat woman who liked toknow everything that happened in Avonlea and also liked people, especially Marilla, asked her for some advices, went to Green Gables interested in the Cuthberts’ little girl. She disagreed with Marilla about adopting the little girl and when Anne came into the house, Mrs. Lynde made some rude comments about the girl; Anne did not like listening that and told her she was a horrible, fat and oldlady, and went upstairs to her room and began to cry. Mrs. Lynde reproached her bad behaviour and comments, but Marilla told her she was so rude with Anne, Mrs. Lynde upset for Marilla’s comments left the house angry.

After Mrs Lynde left Green Gables, Marilla went to Anne’s room to talk her. They had a chat about the behaviour of Anne, Marilla asked Anne to apologise Mrs. Lynde, but thegirl did not want to. Marilla told Anne she could spend time in her bedroom thinking about her behaviour and the chances of saying sorry to Mrs. Lynde. Anne spent all day long in the bedroom till Matthew went to talk about the same. He asked Anne apologise Mrs. Lynde and come back to normal life. Anne accepted do it, and the next day she and Marilla went to Mrs. Lynde house. When they werein the kitchen Anne fell down in her knees and beg Mrs. Lynde her forgiveness. Marilla thought that Anne was pretending feel sorry and enjoying the situation. Mrs. Lynde accepted Anne’s apologies and changed her opinion about her.
