Studies

In 1921 he won the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Electrical Engineering degree in 1924 and a Ph.D. in Science, specializing in mathematical physics, with the thesis "The Bohr atom from the point of view of general relativity and calculation of interference ". In 1927, he won a Guggenheim Fellowship which enabled him to go to the University ofBerlin. It was in Germany where his teachers to Albert Einstein, Max Planck, Erwin Schrödinger and Max von Laue. At the end of 1932 he returned to MIT, where he worked with Georges Lemaitre developed a quantitative theory of the motion of a charged particle of electricity in the earth's magnetic field..

Teaching and academic

In 1939 he established the Institute of Physics of the NationalAutonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and was appointed as its director Alfredo Baños, who initiated a program of scientific collaboration with Sandoval Vallarta at MIT. In 1939, he was appointed professor of physics at MIT, where he taught physics to talented Richard Feynman as future Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1944 he left his chair at the institute to return to Mexico to take over as Director ofthe National Polytechnic Institute (he held until the year 1947), despite his new role he continued his research. From 1943 to 1957 produced in Mexico about 30 items of international circulation and devoted part of his time to the promotion and dissemination of science. He was Secretary of Public Education during the administration of President Adolfo Ruiz Cortines.
He joined the National Collegeon April 8, 1943 as a founding member. He was honored with the medal of the Legion of Honor by the French government in 1952.1 He received the National Prize of Sciences and Arts in Sciences of Mexico in 1959.2 He was a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences since 1961. He died on April 18, 1977 in Mexico City, his remains were transferred to the Rotunda of Illustrious Persons in October1988

Docencia y academico

En 1939 se creó el Instituto de Física dela Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) y se nombró como su director a Alfredo Baños, quien inició un programa de colaboración científica con Sandoval Vallarta en el MIT. En 1939, fue nombrado profesor titular de física del MIT, donde enseñó física a jóvenes talentosos como Richard Feynman futuro Premio Nobel de Física. En 1944 dejó su cátedra en dicho instituto al volver a México paraocupar el cargo de Director del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (que conservó hasta el año de 1947), a pesar de su nueva responsabilidad continuó sus investigaciones.
