Leatherback Turtle  (Dermochelys coriaceathe)
The leatherback is the largest turtle and the largest living reptile in the world.
The leatherback is the only sea turtle that lacks a hard, bonyshell. A leatherback's top shell is approximately 4 cm thick and consists of leathery, oil-saturated connective tissue overlaying loosely interlocking dermal bones. The carapace has seven longitudinalridges and tapers to a blunt point.
Leatherbacks are commonly known as pelagic (open ocean) animals, but they also forage in coastal waters. In fact, leatherbacks are the most migratory and wide rangingof sea turtle species.

Hatchlings: Latherback sea turtle hatchlings emerge from their eggs after 50 to 78 days of incubating under the sand. Once they hatch, they must go to the open ocean.Migration: It will spend the majority of its life cycle in the open ocean, traveling up to 3,700 miles both ways from breeding to feeding areas.
Adult turtles: Only one in 1,000 leatherback sea turtlehatchlings ever survive to the adult stage of their life cycle. The leatherback will spend most of their adult lives traveling through the open ocean.
Reproduction: Female sea turtles will return toshore to lay their eggs after mating in the open ocean, while males almost never return to shore once they pass the hatchling stage of their life cycle.
Death: The leatherback sea turtle has thepotential to reach an age of anywhere between 30 and 50 years old.
