Topic: Protecting woman against gender base violence.

Between 15 and 76 percent of women are targeted for physical and/or
sexualviolence in their lifetime. Most of this violence takes place within
intimate relationships, with many women (from 9 to 70 percent) reporting
their husbands or partners as the onewho do it. Worldwide, up to 50
percent of sexual assaults are committed against girls under 16. South
Korea shows that 30 to 40 percent of women suffer workplace sexual
harassment. In South Korea violence against women remains a problem, and some
women's rights groups maintain that such violence, including spousal
abuse, was made with the recent decrease ofthe economy. In 1993 the
D eclaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women was
implemented by the United Nations General Assembly.
In 1998 the
Government enacted thePrevention of Domestic Violence and Victim
Protection Act, which defines domestic violence as a serious crime. The
law requires police to respond immediately to reports of domesticviolence.
Under the law, companies can be fined up to $2,500 (3 million won) for
failing to take steps to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace or
failing to punish an offender. Inaddition the Ministry of Education
announced that the law's guidelines would apply at public schools and that
teachers who make gender-discriminatory would be disciplined.
Eventough the country is trying to end this problem, it has increased a
12% since 1997. The number of women and girls harmed is really high.
The female population is decreasing. If SouthKorea wants a change they
have to be aware of all the problems that are happening and looking for
more solutions. This would be the only way to stop or decrease the
problem.
