Martin Luther
The life of MartinLuther is one of the most fascinating stories in the history of Christianity. It has all the stuff of a good novel: parental conflict, spiritual agony, life-changing moments, near-misses, princes, popes,emperors, castles, kidnapping, mobs, revolution, massacres, politics, courage, controversy, disguises, daring escapes, humor and romance. And not only is it a good story, it marks a major turningpoint in western history and in Christianity.
Many people know something about Martin Luther. He was born on November 10th, 1483 in Eisleben, a small town in the region of Saxony in modern Germany, andhe died on 18th February, 1546 in the same town. Luther studied theology in Wittenberg University, and soon he was a young professor, whit a doctorate in theology, at the newly founded University ofWittenberg.
But, that information is not enough. Martin Luther translated the New Testament from Latin to German in 1522, and he and his collaborators completed the translation of the Old Testament in1534. He felt a great passion for the Bible, with particular interest the work Pauline. Luther penned 95 statements against the practice of selling indulgences. On October 31, 1517, he nailed his 95Theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg.
 He wanted to purify the church and to eliminate much of the structure of the church, such as the monasteries. Most importantly, he believedthat man did not need the Church or the priesthood to experience God directly. Luther was obsessed with discovering if this was true or not and he thought he found it in the words of Paul: "the justshall live by his faith." Luther believed that man could be saved by simply accepting God and this was a radical change from what the Roman Catholic Church taught. The Church believed that good works...
