PRESENTATION

In the Present monograph, the reader
He/she will find sentences and words that are
Considered idioms of the region.AN OBSERVATION

In the present the reader works he/she will notice that, in what refers to the department, we say: “El Petén,” “Al Petén,” “Del Petén,” etc. This obeys a simple idiom or habit of the region, to more than on the other hand we see that the governmental agreements of creation of all the municipalities ofthe department say: “Of the department of the Petén, or of The Petén,” see the case of Melchor of Mencos concretely, the Agreement of creation of the Urban Center and the one says the foundation of the municipality.
If we say: “El Progreso”, “El Quiche” reason not to say “El Petén”. -

PREFACE

In 2005, when I had the happy opportunity toresearch this beautiful corner of Guatemala that I was fancied by the references that it had exotic, primitive, full with legends and natural charms and it was not for less, because MELCHOR DE MENCOS is located in the center of the curve that forms the dividing line between El Petén and Belize. Straight line one kilometer of the Belizean population, Benque Viejo del Carmen and it communicates with herby means of a tract road magnify conditions. In their time it was land of a beautiful Mayan city as they attest it, the remains of many palaces and housings that are still conserved in those that we see the sumptuosity that they were object.
To gather this information I grouped some notes that I already had, it meets that I with age people that although they don't always give truthfulinformation, mainly when these they are not native of the place, in something they guide the author. When testing some of the data that I could find in many of the works and consulted documents, I found that MELCHOR DE MENCOS has been populated in two or three occasions. But in the same occasions for reasons of political order and for the hard tasks that the departmental authorities imposed the neighbors, these were forced to abandon their homes. There was time in that they were only two or three inhabited houses, but certainly the authorities of surveillance that remained in the town from the conquest of El PETÉN, by don MARTIN DE URZUA.
The abandonment of these places was total and in fact the only thing that encouraged them was the constant step of the places filled with chicle that led fromdifferent points from the immense mountain “Petenera” to Belize in whose port was aboarded toward the foreigner.
To conclude, I want to leave perseverance that with the effort that today I am putting to do my project, I don't seek to reach any favor or grace, but, only to have the satisfaction of putting in my fellow teachers and friends´ hands, information more or less ordinate of the events butnotables that I have been able to gather, and that next time you visit this beautiful town, you have an idea of what it was like originally.
It doesn't let me more that to surrender my sincere gratefulness to all and each one of those people to who in one afternoon or one Sunday, I made them lose part from their time when being some story and that in the course of this in more than an occasion,...
