Towards Minimalism!
Minimalist linguistics is a new approach to the study of generative linguistics. Its main goal is provide a simplified set of rules and transformations for all thelanguages to fully explain their structures and forms.
The minimalist Program (MP) developed in the early 1990s by Noam Chomsky, it is called program and not theory because it is a way of investigationquite flexible for the several directions his minimalism enables, that is that the Program set the guide of development of the generative linguistic theory, but offers neither specific solutions toalready known technical problems, nor explanations to already known linguistic phenomena.
The Minimalist Program is set on the hypothesis of that Universal Grammar contains only the strictly necessaryto cover our physical, biological and conceptual necessities. The Program works with the question of what are exactly the properties of language, and also the question of why are they the way they are,attempting to simplify the theory of syntax.
From a theoretic point of view the Minimalist Program feeds from the last theoretic standard model of the generativism developed in the 1980s calledPrinciple and Parameters approach. What this model suggests is basically that there is a set of principles valid for all languages, these principles are then applied and combined limitedly by the speaker,in order to fulfil the concrete properties of the mother tongue.
As a new approach, in the Minimalist Program X-bar Theory is replaced by Bare Phrase Structure (BPS) that structures the treediagrams bottom up and involves the elements of Move and Merge. The operation Move replaces the movements we find in Transformational Grammar and is triggered by the Principle of Full Interpretation(Chomsky,1995) this principle claims that features must be checked in a local configuration, that is element by element and not as a whole, thus not in a global configuration:
