Mormonism and Mr. Joseph Smith
Beginnings:
-Joseph Smith went to a grove of trees to pray in the forest. When a light shined on his head and all the sudden he saw two figures coming down from thesun. He couldn’t make out the figure, but one of them pointed to him and said, “This is my beloved son.”
-Smith believed that this was god and Jesus. God was telling him that his sins had beenforgiven. Smith was informed by God that Churches were dishonest, and believed that he needed to form Christ’s church in order to restore the role of the priest, and god’s authority
The Seer Stone:Smith claimed the ability to find hidden treasure through something called “Seer stones”. Smith would place the stones in the bottom of a long hat, and then the reflection given off by the stones would bevisible.
Angel Moroni eventually led Smith to a pile of ancient tiles in which he was given the ability to transcribe them into English.
The Golden Plates:
According to Joseph Smith, an angelidentified as Moroni came to him at night, and told him that the plates could be found in a hill near his house. Moroni instructed him that if he obeyed certain commandments only then would he be able toobtain the plates. One of which was to tell his father about his vision. After failing to tell his father, Moroni urged him to do so. Eventually Smith told his father of his vision and he believedhim. Smith was then able to find the plates.
Translation of the Plates: The plates were written in an ancient mysterious language. Although Smith told his peers that he could translate the plates.With Scribes at his side, Smith translated every line, through the using two Seer stones pressed together, similar to a pair of spectacles. Once the translation was finished, Smith returned the Plates toMoroni. The Translations of the plates were eventually compiled into the book of Mormon.
