SUBJECT: NEW CYLINDER HEAD GASKET AND CYLINDER HEAD BOLT INTRODUCTION

Detroit Diesel has released a new cylinder headgasket and cylinder head bolt effective for all Series 60 Engine Models in production after September 2002.
DETAILS AND REASON

A new cylinder head gasket part number 23530421 and cylinder headbolt part number 23530768 have been released to all Series 60 On-Highway and Off-Highway engine models. Improvements made to the cylinder head gasket include a revised compression seal designed to workwith increased clamp load which is available only with the new cylinder head bolt. A higher torque value 298 N·m (220 lb·ft) is specified for the new cylinder head bolt. The new cylinder head gasket isidentified with a new part number and date code. The new cylinder head bolt is identified with white paint and a groove on top of the bolt see Figure 1.

The new cylinder head gasket must be used with the new cylinder head bolts. There is no change to the procedure other than the new torque value. The new cylinderhead bolts can be used with the former cylinder head gasket. The former bolts cannot be used with the new gasket. Former and new bolts must not be mixed.
