TOPIC: Ethical Implications of the Repatriation of RefugeesHonourable Board, Honourable Delegates,
India is a country with exponential growth, making it one of sthe world’s fastest growing economies, giving us a great responsibility when it comes toprotecting refugees and immigrants that not only come into our country but that we feel responsible for if it’s affecting the stability of the region. The delegation of India wishes that this committeewasn’t necessary and that we had a conflict free world. But unfortunately that is not the case and there are thousands of people fleeing their countries every day to escape from political, racial, religiousor sexual persecution and we are an important hub for refugees from around the region.
India has opened its doors to refugees from different countries that are dealing with internal conflicts suchas Myanmar, Afghanistan and Somalia. We have done our best to protect the Rohingya people that have come into our country by allowing them to work and ensuring their right to life just like any Indian.Anyone who attempts against this right will be fully persecuted by the justice of India. We have been working towards building a stronger relationship with the UNHCR, one example is a meeting thatwas held at the end of last year between the High Commissioner António Guterres and the External Affairs Minister Salman Khursheed and Home Affairs Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde in where they talkedabout strengthening refugee protection.
India deeply believes in promoting voluntary repatriation rightfully supervised by the UNHCR, the delegation believes that refugees who have been longing for areturn back to their home country should be able to do so as long as the government of such country is stable enough and the country’s institutions are back in order and that the well-founded fear...
