Principles of design

Contrast: The combination of different elements of design (red and green, rough and smooth, dark and white) to highlight their differences and/or create balance, visualinterest, or a focal point.

I used contrast in my cover inspired by Osnat Tzadok’s painting “A way to my heart” because I colored some areas of the background roughly and others smoothly, to createthe balance in the cover.

Movement: The path along which the viewer’s eyes move usually to an area of emphasis or focus.

There is movement in my cover inspired by Megan Duncanson´s painting“Aqua Burn”, it seems like the wavy lines in the bottom are moving!

Elements of design:

Shape: The external form or outline of an image produced by the use of line, value, colour, and/ortexture.

There is shape in all the covers. In the one based on Osnat’s painting the abstract flowers in the vase have different colors and shapes. In the one based on Megan’s painting there are lotsof circles and wavy lines. And finally the one with more shapes is the cover based on Chidi’s painting, there are circles, snail shapes, lines, etc.

Colour: Four characteristics of colourare hue (name), value (lightness or darkness), intensity (amount of pigment), and temperature (warm and cool).

In my covers I used warm (orange, green, yellow, etc) and cool (purple, pink, lightblue, dark green, etc) colors because both can give to the different designs a soft attraction, and also because they are more appealing at first sight.

Value: The lightness or darkness of acolour or the gradual changes from light to dark even if colour is absent. Value can be used to create contrast.

I used value in my cover inspired by Megan Duncanson’s painting “Aqua Burn” because Istarted painting with aquamarine and then with light blue and finally with blue (from clear to dark). I contrasted those colors to create a beautiful sky that would cause visual interest.
