Why was Queen Mary known as “Bloody Mary”?
Queen Mary was Catholic. She was known as “Bloody Mary” because of the number of Protestants who were killed during her reign. She killed them by havingthem burn at the stake. Her nickname, Bloody Mary, was given to her after her death.
The Early life of Mary
Mary Tudor was born on Monday February 18th 1516, in Greenwich Palace. She was the onlydaughter of Queen Catherine of Aragon and King Henry VIII. She was given the best of care as the daughter of the King and Queen of England. Mary was well educated, she could read Greek and Latin,understood Italian and spoke Latin, French and Aragonese Spanish.
Mary was bound to be the queen of England. England had never been successfully ruled by a woman before. King Henry VIII feared a civil warif he didn’t have a male child. Mary’s life drastically changed when her father cast her loyal and devoted mother aside for another woman, called Anne Boleyn. Catherine refused to grant Henry adivorce but he finally forced her to do so. King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn had a daughter: Elizabeth. Elizabeth was Mary’s stepsister. Mary’s parents’ divorce turned Mary into a bitter person.
Mary wasdevastated by the terrible events in her life. Henry married Anne Boleyn in 1533. Mary’s parents’ marriage was over and the Catholic religion was now being questioned.

Elizabeth was born in 1533.Mary Tudor’s position was usurped by the new baby Princess. In 1534 the Act of Supremacy was passed. On March 23rd, 1534 the English Parliament passed the Act of Succession. Only the children of KingHenry VIII's marriage to Anne Boleyn were to be considered his lawful heirs. The title of Princess Mary was reduced to that of Lady Mary. And Lady Mary was declared a bastard.
