ROBERT MILLIKAN AND THE ATOMIC THEORY





The electrons are part of the atom. Yet the scientists in the 19th century didn't knew about it's charge and it's weight. Yet in this centurythe radioactivity was discover . With this discovery and with materials that can be found in a laboratory and in a house , a teacher made a big discovery that now is part of the atomic theory.At the late of the 19th century, there was no exact accepted model of what we call the "atom". The scientists, in that century believed that the atoms were invisible. Yet in that same centurywas the discovery of the radioactivity. With this discovery the thought about the atom ,that is invisible, change with this great discovery.
Robert Millikan, one of the few that influence inthe atomic theory . He was born in1868 and died in 1953. He work as a court reporter and then he went to Maquoketa High School. Also Robert was a scientists that worked in optics, electricity, andmolecular physics.
His mayor success was the discovery of the electrons by the "Falling-Drop Method" . Also he demonstrate that the electrons have al the same mass , weight and charge.
Yet J.J.Thomson thought about the mass of a only one electron, but Millikan prove the real mass amount.
Neil Bohr help Millikan to calculate the final Rydberg's Constant( formula for calculating the wavelines in a atomic spectra), providing one of the parts that make the atomic theory.
With his work in the photoelectron effect, he help Albert Einstein for producing the atomic bomb.
The fallingdrop method , is a method made by Millikan and Harvey Fletcher in 1909. This method or experiment measured the size of the charge of the electrons.
