Rural Studio
Rural Studio is an off-campus design-build program of Auburn University. The program, established in 1993 by D.K. Ruth and Samuel Mockbee, gives architecture students a more hands-on educational experience whilst assisting an underserved population in West Alabama's Black Belt region. In its initial years, the Studio became known forestablishing an ethos of recycling, reusing and remaking.
The Rural Studio philosophy suggests that everyone, both rich or poor, deserves the benefit of good design. To fulfill this ethic, the Studio has evolved towards more community-oriented projects. Projects have become multi-year, multi-phase efforts traveling across three counties. The students work within the community to define solutions, fundraise, design and, ultimately, build remarkable projects. The Studio continually questions what should be built, rather than what can be built, both for the performance and operation of the projects. To date, Rural Studio has built more than 150 projects and educated more than 600 "Citizen Architects."
the rural studio
the rural studio is different from other university
architectureprograms. instead of sitting in a classroom, students gain first hand experience by designing and constructing buildings in rural alabama. these buildings
are the result of collaborating with the clients and
community directly. students in the rural studio actually
live in the same community they are working with, understanding the context first hand. the mission of the
rural studio is to ‘enableeach participating student to
cross the threshold of misconceived opinions by
putting their educational values to work as citizens
of a community’. their belief is that architecture should
be created from within, not from outside.
since 1993, the rural studio has built over 80 projects,
which have helped the community and taught the
students valuable lessons. the studio is basedin
hale county, alabama, one of the poorest regions in
the US. understanding the particular needs and
constraints of this community is vital to the creation
of meaningful designs.
history
the rural studio was founded in 1993 by two auburn
university architecture professors, dennis k. ruth
and the late samuel mockbee. the program was
established for two reasons, to give architecture students hands-on experience and to improve the
living conditions in rural alabama. these goals are
what make the rural studio so unique. not only do
students have the opportunity to expand their
knowledge through building their own designs,
but they also put their skills to use in one of the
poorest areas of the US.
participating students leave the auburn university
campus andmove to hale county, alabama. it is here
where they live first hand with the people they will be designing for, in what the studio calls ‘context-based
learning’. rather than designing from the outside,
students are encouraged to understand and
experience the particular needs of their clients
for themselves.
the rural studio produces a number of projects
each year. private homes and...
