En este trabajo hablaremos delsistema internacional de medidas y la importancia que tiene, ya que a lo largo de la historia el hombre ha venido empleando diversos tipos de sistemas de unidades. Estos estaacuten iacutentimamente relacionados con la condicioacuten histoacuterica de los pueblos que las crearon, las adaptaron o las impusieron a otras culturas. Su permanencia y extensioacuten en el tiempo loacutegicamentetambieacuten ha quedado ligada al destino de esos pueblos y a la aparicioacuten de otros sistemas maacutes coherentes y generalizados. El sistema anglosajoacuten de medidas -millas,pies, libras, Grados Fahrenheit - todaviacutea en vigor en determinadas aacutereas geograacuteficas, es, no obstante, un ejemplo evidente de un sistema de unidades en recesioacuten. Otros sistemas son el cegesimal -centiacutemetro, gramo, segundo -, el terrestre o teacutecnico -metro-kilogramo, fuerza-segundo-, el Giorgi o MKS - metro, kilogramo, segundo- y el sistema meacutetrico decimal, muy extendido en ciencia, industria y comercio, y que constituyoacute la base de elaboracioacuten del Sistema Internacional.
