Data Architecture Process
1. Design Data Templates
Working from your proposed wireframes, prototypes, Photoshop mock-ups and known data, create a first draft of Data Templates on paper orwhiteboard. At this early stage, we draft in paper not Sitecore. This will be an iterative process.
Try to keep your Data Templates streamlined – focused just on the fields that need to be on each template.Pull out shared data into base templates or Data Templates for support items in the non-public parts or your tree.
Remember – you’re modeling website data and business user behavior.
Keep a closeeye out for variations in presentation or logic – these often are the most difficult to resolve later. Think of ways to incorporate variation in to your Data Templates, Insert Options or PresentationComponents before coding begins.
2. Design Insert Options
Focusing on business user behavior, begin drafting out the Insert Options you’ll need – allowing your users to add exactly what they requireat each node in the tree. You may find that you have to create variations on one data template to support this. For example, the Training Sample Site has a Product Section data template that inheritsfrom Site Section. Product Section adds no new fields, but does specify its own Insert Options, icon, etc., that make business users’ lives easier.
3. Draft Content Tree
Still working in paper-mode,create a simplified draft version of your content tree. For each item, note its data template. Revise your Data Templates and Insert Options as required.
4. Design Presentation Components
Workingfrom your graphic design documents, Data Templates and draft content tree, create a list of Presentation Components you’ll require. Don’t worry about the type of component (e.g., sublayouts vs. xlstrenderings vs. web controls). You’ll make those decisions at coding time.
