“Soldier’s Home”
“Soldier’s Home” is a story about a young man by the name of Krebs’s and many other soldiers, that upon their return home having to deal with the post warsyndrome. Krebs was a young college student, who left home to enlist in the Marines which eventually lead him to war intern changing his life. He came back home months later than theother war veterans, so he was not granted the same home coming celebration as the others.
At the beginning Krebs was not willing to talk about the war, but when Krebs finallyopening up and want to speak of his experience but to his dismay his word fell on death ears and no one was willing to listen to him. People had already heard enough exciting stories,and had no time for his actuality stories. He realized, to get the attention of other he resorted to lying so he started to talk about experiences of others. His unimportant liessoon, bought him to feel a sense of disgust then once again he refused of talking about the war. The feeling that the protagonist lived in the story are common to many other soldiers.Upon his return, he felt as though everything around him was different but in the end all was the same as before he left, the only thing that changed was his point of view on thelife. The need to get others attention, brought him to lie. All the lies that he told and the disgust that he felt, was consequence of loosing the respect for himself, and what heactually accomplish in his life before and during the war.
Krebs see everyday life like something to avoid, because full of complication. It is as if he does not want to takeresponsibility and commitment, such as a job or sentimental relationships. Krebs is living an aimless life where it seems that things have lost their value and he can live without them.
