-During the coldwar, the United States and the Soviet Union wanted to gain influence in third world countries

-The U.S. and Soviet Union both used different strategies to do this. They backed revolutions,liberation, and counter revolutions.

-The U.S. CIA and the Russian KGB engaged in spying and assassination attempts

-Both countries provided aid, built schools, and created programs to fight poverty innon-aligned nations.

-The Soviet Union offered military and technical assistance. They offered this mainly to India and Egypt.

-Industrialization and population growth between rich and poor countries led latin countries to seek aid from superpowers

-After the war,Communism and nationalist feelings inspired revolutionary movements.In response, the United States provided military and economic support to anti-communist leaders.

-Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchevsecretly built 42 missile sites in Cuba and had them pointed towards the U.S., President Kennedy demanded immediate removal of the missiles. This put the Soviet Union and The United States on a collisioncourse.

Civil War in Nicaragua

-Civil war broke out in Nicaragua. It was because of a dictator named Anastasio Somoza. Sandista rebels toppled Somoza’s son. Sandistas were supported by the UnitedStates and the Soviet Union. The Sandistas leader was Daniel Ortega. The United States also supported anti-communist forces called contras. The Civil war in Nicaragua lasted a decade. The war greatly...
