The purpose of this commentary is to analyze the contrast between reality and fantasy present in the passage of “The door in the wall” by Wells. The idea is to see how the narrator is building hisown view of reality which is opposed to the cruel reality in which he must live.
Tension is sustained all through the passage to describe the situation. The narrator stopped his narration andhis interlocutor is the one who encourages to go on by asking him questions. Suspense is created by delaying the answer about what the book is.
There is nothing worse than waking up of a dream, anice dream that you think it is real. In this passage it can be seen the contrast between reality and fantasy. The child is pulled away from his fantasy to be carried away into reality. Thecontrast between these two sides can be seen in the use of adjectives. On one site, in the enchanted garden, the entire happiness, on the other site the imageries are dark as when he describes a sombredark woman.
However, the boundaries between fantasy and reality are questioned by the main character. To see these we can analyze some things. First, the narrator is not sure towards what he isretelling. By using the suspension points he conveys that there is a gap in his memory, things that cannot be remembered. This gap makes the reader think that he is not sure about his own reality. He keeps on questioning the boundaries by saying: “The pages of the book are not pictures but realities”. This sentence shows how a book, which is supposed to be fiction could be for this boy, hisreality. That is why when the book is showed to him, he “can feel the conflict and the fear”.
But in the end, the boundaries between one and the other are sadly too clear. The pages do not showhis beloved garden. It only shows a grey and chili street. No friends to play with, no happiness at all. Finally, he “comes back from his enchanted garden to the steps of his father´s house.”
