Theorical Framework

Theme: Fulani tribe.

Fulani is a nomadic tribe in West Africa between Nigeria and Cameroon. They number 10 million in Northern Nigeria, 40% of the population in Guinea,Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Burkina Faso and Mali. They are easily recognized because of its thin, large and slim body when compared to other Africans. They are usually referred as “white” by theirneighbors because their skin is lighter than the other African people. Also they are responsible of the diffusion of the Muslim religion throughout Africa.

Men are usually wearing solid color shirt andpants, a long cloth around their heads, walking sticks (named spears) across their shoulders and their arms are resting on top of it. Usually they have marks on the sides of their faces and/or foreheadand this are received when they are children. The Fulani women are characterized as very graceful, there are usually caring calabash bowls filled with milk products. Their clothes have a backgroundcolor, which is usually red or yellow. Their hair is very long and its braided in five braid hanging or looped with old coins hanging from it. Just as the men they have marks on their faces mostly intheir lips.

They are recognized by their hospitality with their visitors. They want them to feel welcome and at home, it’s not weird that the visitors leave the village with a chicken, anothersmall animal or another type of present.

Fulani people are different from the other Africans because beauty is very important for them. An important characteristic is that they use henna to maketattoos all over their body, specially their faces and most of all their lips on the women case. They usually tattoo their lips so much that they look a dark black. When talking about the men, the mostimportant thing is being brave. This is reflected on their weapons and ceremonies.
