The last kings of Thulé

Before the age of eight, children are treated like babies, due to the fact that adults consider that they are not prepared for their initiationrite. This is clearly seen in the different actions that adults do, such as talking to the not-prepared ones in a childish way and never punishing or hitting them. Also kids are always allowed to befree and play. They are the centre of attention and everybody admires them. This is the first part of the process of socialization.


However, once they turn eight, everything changes forthem. That’s the moment when children must start to learn about hunting. The father is the teacher and the son is obliged to be silent, obedient and respectful. Also, their parents can treat them badlyif they do not behave. Since this age, children learn how to survive in the wild, and prepare for the future.


The cause of this change is that at this age they are considered as almostadults, and they must learn how to survive alone and help the tribe; that’s something that younger kids cannot do. It is a much important part of socialization.


2)
a- The difference is shownin the fact that girls are not trained for being an adult, although the extract doesn’t specify; but they don’t have a ritual so as to introduce themselves to the community. They also have a strongerbond with their mothers than their fathers.
Maybe, they are different from boys because they are not supposed to be strong or brave, but the need of the boy is really important to a father inthe community, as the poem shows: he had a daughter and his son was dead, but he was not happy with his daughter birth because he was not supposed to teach her about hunting and, also, because herentrance to adulthood was not going to be celebrated with an initiation rite.
