Olympe de Gouges 

Olympe de Gouges is the pseudonym of Marie Gouze, writer, playwright, pamphleteer and French politics, author of the Declaration of the Rights of Women and of the Citizen .Born in Montauban, in a bourgeois family, She married at age 17 with an older man who was not happy being after a time a widow with a son


She wrote several plays and set up a touring theatercompany that ran the Paris region, including the best known of Black Slavery (L'esclavage des noirs). This bold work intended to draw attention to the condition of black slaves, but Olympe had to face thedisapproval of the actors of the Comédie Française. With the Revolution, his work was finally able to be represented at the ComédieFrançaise. Despite the pressures and threats of the colonial lobby,still very influential,Olympe de Gouges had an intense activity for the abolition of slavery.



His works were deeply feminist and revolutionary. He advocated equality between menand womenin all aspects of public and private life, including equality with men in the right to vote, access to public work, to speak in public policy issues, access to political life, to own and control property, tojoin the army, including fiscal equality and the right to education and equality of power in the family and church.
 

He drafted the Declaration of the Rights of Women and the Citizen, modeled onthe Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen of 1789, which affirmed the equality of the rights of both sexes.
   He also made statements about the abolition of marriage and the introduction ofdivorce, the idea of ​​a renewable yearly contract signed between cohabitants and campaigned for paternal recognition of children born out of wedlock.

Olympe de Gouges wrote an adaptation of theDeclaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen changing in many cases the word man to wife, and other items highlighting the dominance of men over women.
