HISTORY OF VAULTING

Vaulting in a way, has existed as long as men and horses have been partners. Many cultures have taken advantage of this activity, for different reasons; somefor perfection of equestrian arts, self-defence or simply entertainment.

1.1. Origins of Vaulting.

The first or earliest origin of Vaulting, date back in 1500 BC on the Pre-Romanic Iceperiod in South Scandinavia. There were found stone paintings showing horses with people standing on them. These give an impression of what these people consider as "Artistic Riding"[1] in that era.Other roots came from bull dancers in ancient Crete in the Bronze Age. Bull dancing is acrobatic feats performed over the horns and back of a bull, this gave a starting idea of acrobats above animals,and for many people is the beginning of the development of Vaulting.

Vaulting was an Olympic sport in roman times in Greece, performed by soldiers about 2000 years ago. They practice vaulting torefine their equestrian skills, and to gain prestige and nobility.
In Renaissance and In Middle Ages all noblemen and knights practice Vaulting as a form of riding drill and agility exercise. It was asymbol of status, wealth and good taste.

Vaulting was included as "Artistic Riding" by cavalry officers in the Olympic Games of Antwerp in 1920. Every higher military of cavalry troops regardedVaulting for advanced equestrian education.

Modern Vaulting, much as is practiced today, was developed in post-war Germany as a means of introducing children to equestrian sports.

In 1983, Vaultingbecame one of the equestrian disciplines recognised by the “FEI”[2]. The first European Championships took place 1984 in Ebreichsdorf, Austria and the first WC in 1986 in Bulle, Switzerland.
