Genetically Engineered Guideline

Geneticengineering is when you alter the genetic makeup of an organism, removing heritable material or introducing DNA prepared outside the organism into a cell. Plants, animals, and microorganisms have beenchanged through genetic engineering and are now genetically modified organisms or GMOs. Bacteria were the first organisms to be genetically modified. Plants that have been modified with traits intendedto provide benefit to farmers, consumers, and industries around the world. These traits include improved shelf life, disease resistance, stress resistance, herbicide resistance, pest resistance,production of useful goods such as biofuel or drugs, and ability to absorb toxins. Also they include insect protection, virus resistance, enhanced nutrition, tolerance to environmental pressures and theproduction of edible vaccines. The majority of genetically modified crops in agriculture consist of crops, such as soybean, maize, cotton and rapeseed. Plants, including algae, maize, and other plantshave been genetically modified for use in producing fuel, known as biofuel. Also genetically engineering increases the nutritional value and provides more quantities of the product. One example ofthis is the Amflora potato which produces a more useful blend of starches.
