Wilhelm Wundt
Wilhelm Wundt was teaching physiology at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.
From the beginning of his career he showed a big interest in the mental processes. In the epoch ofWundt the field of the psychology did not exist and its study target belonged to the philosophy.
The ambition of Wundt was to establish the independent identity of the psychology.
With thisintention in mind he leaves Heidelberg to be a chief of the philosophy department of the University of Leipzig.
Several years later he melt the first laboratory to perform investigations in psychology.He believed that the psychologists had to investigate the elementary processes of the human conscience, its relations, combinations and its interactions.
Wundt is often described as a chemist of themental life. In a hit way the Wundt’s approach has been named structuralism.
The world of the psychology contains looks, tones and contacts; it is the world of darkness and light, of noise andsilence, of the rough thing and the smooth thing; its space sometimes is big and sometimes is a child.
It contains also the thoughts, memories, imaginations that naturally are awarded to the mind.
Wundtadopted the scientific methods of the physiology and the practices of informal observation that we use every day and he also designed another tool called analytical introspection
The Wundt’scriteria was strict it was considered that the observers were not providing reliable information
The Wundt’s investigation had two principles:
Analysis followed by synthesis. After decomposing theconscience of its elements, it was trying to join them again, combining them, in order to find, the key of the judgments and perceptions.
The psychology of Wundt had his heyday and it spreaded withparticular rapidity in Europe, the United States and Canada.
The Wundt’s laboratory inspired similar efforts in the whole world.
This penetrating influence. was what gained to Wundt the founder's title...
