WWII the aftermath

US
• Economically superb
• Had about 8 million uniformed soldiers
• Had global military commitments with Germany and Japan
• Citizens wanted their familyback
• Truman wanted to keep a strong army
• Congress and citizens thought it too expensive – by 1947 the US army had reduced to become the 6th in size
• March 12, 1947 - Monrow Doctrine:declared it to be the foreign policy of the United States to assist any country whose stability was threatened by communism. Truman’s initial request was specifically for $400 million to assist bothGreece and Turkey (“attacked” by communism).
• 1947 – Marshall Plan: 13.3 billion to support the recovery of European nations; the only requirement was for them to have a reconstruction plan tostabilize their economy

- August 1945 – URSS takes North Korea and it is divided by the38 parallel, SK by US military administration (MacArthur)
- June 29, 1950 – NK crosses the border (supported by URSS and China) – beginning of 3 year war : UN reacts and the US leads“police action” (also involved British and Commonwealth navies)
- Very bloody war, NK frequently on top. URSS and US had opportunity for missile showdown – US won
- Mid 1951 armisticetalks began – POWs problem…
- July, 1953 – Operation Big Switch, Demilitarization Zone, Armistice

Cuban Revolution – 1952 to 1958
• 1952: Fulgencio Batista returns to Cubaand seizes power.
