AVIATION IN WOLRD WAR 1

Before the beginning of World War 1, no country had proposed an airplane to be used as a military weapon. No one though airplanes were effective to fight. The use ofaircrafts for military purposes began in 1909 when the Club Aviatori brought Wilbur Wright to Italy to show the first airplane for military purposes only. Wilbur was the teacher of Maria Calderana.He later became Italy’s first pilot. A few years later, European countries began making military airplanes. The French army along with the Russian army were the first to experiment with this kind oftechnology. During 1912 and 1913 the Frenchmen and the British were experimenting with aerial bombing. The United States also began experimenting. In 1910 Curtiss built an airplane for bombardmentpurpose only. He tested the airplane by himself. By 1912, many countries had created their own air forces. When World War 1 started, European countries and the United States became serious and decided toincrease the production of airplanes for war.
In 1914, Germany began using aerial reconnaissance duties. The photography reconnaissance consisted of a lot of photos which formed a map of thetrench system. Observation balloons were use to perform this kind of jobs. They were patrolled by airplanes and they usually carried a crew of two persons. Balloons didn’t win every time. Pilots known asballoons busters had the duty to destroy observation balloons.

Possibly, the most recognized planes of World War 1 were the Fokkers. Anthony Fokker was born in Java on April 6, 1890. Hestudied the basics of aeronautics and built his first airplane in 1910. Then, he created a small factory and a flight school. In 1915, the Fokker E.I became the first successful airplane to enter inservice. This plane was very useful at combat because it had a synchronization gear. In the late 1915s, the Germans had a lot of power in the air with the Fokker E-II. This period, were the Fokker...
