Possessive Case - The Atanasoff–Berry Computer (ABC)

[pic]

The Atanasoff–Berry Computer (ABC) was the world's first electronic digital computer, but it was not programmable. In 1937, technicians designed themachine only to solve systems of linear equations. Its storage mechanism was unreliable. However, many elements of the ABC were important for modern computing, including binary arithmetic and electronic switching elements, but its special-purpose nature and lack of a changeable, stored program distinguish it from modern computers.

1. Translate the following phrases

How is the possessive case formed?
1) To change a singular noun into the possessive case, we add an ’s to it.
John’s father
Peter’s bag
2) When the noun is plural in number and does not end in –s, the possessive case is formed by adding ’s to it.
Men’s wear
People’s voice
3) When the plural noun ends in –s, we simply add an apostrophe (’) to it.
Boys’school
James’ palace
4) Proper nouns ending in –s can be changed to the possessive case by adding an apostrophe with or without –s. Note that with well known names we only add the apostrophe without –s.
Pythagoras’ Theorem
Archimedes’ Principle
Yeats’ poems
5) With other proper nouns we usually add ’s.
Thomas’s house
James’s restaurant
6) In compound nouns, ’s is added to the lastword.
Sister-in-law’s daughter
Father-in-law’s brother

Uses of the possessive case
The possessive case is chiefly used with the names of living things and personified objects.
Tom’s hands
John’s keys
Fortune’s favors
The possessive case is also used with nouns denoting space, time or weight.
A pound’s weight
A month’s salary
An hour’s ride
Note that the possessive case is not normallyused with the names of non-living things. Instead we use a structure with of.
The leg of the table (NOT The table’s leg)
The hand of the clock (NOT The clock’s hand)
Notes
The possessive case does not always indicate possession. It may indicate other ideas such as origin, kind and authorship as well.
Akbar’s fort (A port built by Akbar)
St. Paul’s Cathedral (A cathedral dedicated to St.Paul)
The Judge’s verdict (A verdict given by the Judge)
We use ‘whose’ to ask about possession. We use ‘whose’ in two ways
1 whose + noun + verb to be?
Whose mobile is that? It’s hers.
Whose magazines are these? They’re Paul’s.
2 whose + verb to be + noun phrase?
Whose is this bag? It’s mine.
Whose are those books? They’re Francesca’s.
