Afghanistan is a country that’s placed in Central Asia, between Pakistan, India, and ex Soviets Republics as Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. It has been always considered a strategic country, because itwas the republic that was used as a bridge between Russia (Former Soviet Union), India, Pakistan and even China. As a matter of fact, Soviets and Americans tried to establish military bases in itsterritory during the Cold War, and Afghanistan decided to help Soviets. Back in 1990, when the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet Union was disgregated into many countries, the Afghans had a huge economicand political crisis that almost finished with the country, but they were very lucky to receive help from the USA and that made life in Afghanistan less miserable.
Since 1996 the Taliban are in thegovernment in Afghanistan. They are a group of fundamentalist Muslims that took advantage of religion as they seeked power. For them the Islam should be followed just as it is in the Koran, and forthem the icons of other religions should be destroyed, because they are promoting another religion that’s not the Islam.
In Afghanistan there is a valley that’s in the region of Bamiyan, in the centreof the country, where there are many statues of Buddha, but there are specially two that atract the attention of everyone. Those statues were sculptured in the Vth Century and they are 38 and 58metres high. The odd thing about these figures is that they are standing and not sitting on their knees as most Buddha statues are, so that makes those two rare, and they were sheltered under the UnitedNation’s Fund for Preservation of historical sites.
But Omar, the leader of the Taliban, didn’t respect that, and in the first days of March had those statues destroyed. There have been multiplereactions to this vandalic act by many countries and worldwide organisations, but nobody has been able to do anything about it, because the Taliban say that it’s only their decision and no one should...
