Against Legalizing Marijuana
We agreed on May 11th that we would debate whether legalizing marijuana with the conditions of purchasing it only at the age of 19, in coffee shops and only in a limitedamount of 7 grams. Marijuana is, by far, the world’s most commonly used illicit drug and far more dangerous than most users realize, therefore the Black market distributing marijuana is extremelylarge and exposed all over the nation of Canada. Cannabis contains 400 different chemicals and therefore has an impact on hormones as well as the body in general. Marijuana contributes many negativefactors to our everyday lives and we feel that no positive outcome may come with this decision. In a very general sense the negative factors marijuana has are: health problems, problems with smugglingmarijuana out of Canada, cases where it is legalized, and the fact that it is a gateway drug.
Marijuana is an illicit drug for a reason, according to the ACDE the mental and physical dangers ofmarijuana are: impaired perception, diminished short-term memory, loss of concentration and coordination, impaired judgement, increased risk of accidents, loss of motivation, diminished inhibitions,increased heart rate, anxiety, panic attacks, and paranoia, hallucinations, psychological dependency, damage to the respiratory, reproductive, and immune systems and last but not least increased risk ofcancer. Even though alcohol and cigarettes are legal and very dangerous drugs as well, the difference with Marijuana is that this illicit drug has an enormous Black Market and is already very exposed toteenagers as well as adults. It would be very hard to end with this market and sell regulated Marijuana when drug dealers could easily keep selling it with a higher rate of THC (the amount of THC inmarijuana determines the drug’s strength) and of course no taxes.
