Alexander Graham Bell
(Edinburgh, UK, 1847-Beinn Bhreagh, Canada, 1922) and speech therapist Scientific American of Scottish inventor of the telephone. Born into a family dedicated to speech andcorrect pronunciation, Bell was educated with his brothers in the professional family tradition. He studied at the Royal High School of Edinburgh, and attended some classes at the University ofEdinburgh and University College London, but his training was basically self-taught.

In 1864 he held a residency at the Weston House Academy in Elgin, where he developed his firstsound studies, in 1868 he worked as assistant to his father in London, taking up his post following the departure of it to America. The sudden death of his older brother because of tuberculosis,which had also ended the life of his younger brother, had a negative impact on both health and the state of mind of Bell.
In these circumstances, in 1870 he moved to a town near Brantford (Canada) withthe rest of his family, where he soon began to improve their status. A year later he settled in Boston, where he focused his activity to raise awareness of the deaf learning system developed by hisfather, collected in the book Visible Speech (1866). The spectacular results of their work soon earned him a well deserved reputation, receiving offers to give several lectures, and in 1873 wasappointed professor of vocal physiology at Boston University.
