What is Urban Design?
Urban design is the art of making wonderful places. Good urban design sets the stage for our daily
lives by concerning itself with buildings, the spaces between buildings, land use, density, historic and
natural features, materials, the public realm, and the quality of the existing and future built
environment.
Urban design artfullyintegrates the necessary functional and technical aspects of the city with the
desired physical form and appearance.
Urban Design is an expression of how we choose to live, and it shapes the quality of life in our urban
setting.
All great cities display the qualities of this important, but only recently recognized discipline.
Qué es diseño urbano?
El diseño urbano es el arte de hacer lugaresmaravillosos. El buen diseño urbano crea la escena para
el desarrollo de nuestra vida cotidiana preocupándose por los edificios, los espacios entre los
edificios, uso del suelo, densidad, sus características históricas y naturales, los materiales, el ámbito
público, y la calidad del entorno construido existente y futuro.
El diseño urbano integra ingeniosamente los aspectos necesarios funcionales y técnicosde la ciudad
con la forma física deseada y su apariencia.
Diseño Urbano es una expresión de la forma que elegimos para vivir, y le da forma a la calidad de
vida en nuestro entorno urbano. Todas las grandes ciudades muestran las cualidades de esta
importante disciplina, pero sólo recientemente reconocida.

Urban design isthe art of creating spaces and buildings that encourage positive interaction with
people. It involves the design of buildings, groups of buildings, spaces and landscapes, and the
relationship between people and these environments.
Importantly, urban design is about creating places that "fit" in to the local environment and enhance
neighbourhood identity: It is about more than just the wayindividual buildings or space looks - but is
about the atmosphere it creates; the way it relates to its neighbours and the surrounding
neighbourhood; and its ability to provide the types of spaces that are functional and inviting to people
of all ages.

Specifically urban design is:

¿Qué es el diseño urbano?
El diseño urbano es el arte de crear espacios y edificios que favorezcan la interacción positiva con
las personas. Involucra el diseño de edificios, grupos de edificios, espacios y paisajes, y la relación
entre estas personas y talesambientes.
Es importante destacar que el diseño urbano es la creación de lugares que "encajan" en el medio
ambiente local y mejoran la identidad de sus alrededores: Se trata de algo más que diseñar edificios
individuales u ocuparse sólo de su forma o apariencia, en realidad se ocupa de la atmósfera que
crea, la manera como el diseño individual se relaciona con su vecinos y de su capacidad paraproporcionar los tipos de espacios que resulten funcionales y acogedores para la gente de todas las
edades.
Diseño Urbano es mucho más que la forma de los edificios individuales o sólo o el espacio que se
observa- trata ante todo de la atmósfera que crea.
